Annoyed At Grunts of the Day: Wimbledon chief executive Ian Ritchie revealed in a recent interview with The Daily Telegraph that tournament officials were increasingly voicing their frustration at the noisiness of grunts emanating from female players during matches.

Ritchie said spectators are complaining as well. “[I]f you say ‘what do you get most letters about’, I would say that grunting is high up,” he told the Telegraph.

The All England Lawn and Tennis Club CEO says he feels “an education problem with younger players” is to blame. 21-year-old Belarusian champ Victoria Azarenka — whose loud, long grunts clock in at 95 decibels — defended her yelps, saying she is a weaker player without them as they help her “to accelerate more, to put more power to the ball.”
